The masses are being inspired to join in the process of change through seven mega-movements which are aimed at giving a desired direction to the activities of new development. This ambitious plan has infused renewed hope and enthusiasm in a major part of society.
If we look at the field of material or physical life, there is no dearth of experts working on its various aspects. However, when it comes to inner life, the masses still lack interest in cultivating their inner life, seeking and evolving the infinite treasure of inner divine potentials and making use of them. The main aim of Sadhana movement is to inspire men and women of any class, caste, faith or sect to exercise self-control and revitalise their inner strength.
Sadhana has three dimensions—devotion to God, devotion to self and devotion to society. All three need to be taken care of, strengthened and managed properly. It can be accomplished little by little through Upasana (methodical worship) of God; Sadhana (self-refinement), Swadhyaya (study of self-development noble literature), Sanyam (self-restraint) and engaging in selfless tasks of serving humanity with firm determination.
Nearly 6 million people have so far taken part in Sanjeevani Sadhana (Life Rejuvenating Sadhana) to refine their life. It takes place in Shantikunj on a regular basis.
Gayatri Pariwar's main goal in this movement is to integrate a far more useful element of jivan vidyā (one that cultivates virtues) into conventional education. Besides, people who cannot take advantage of conventional education system need to be educated informally in their own personal environment and situation. The movement also seeks to develop such system.
Dev Sanskriti Vishwa-vidyalaya, which was established in 2002 in Haridwar, has taken many successful initiatives to integrate vidya (value based learning) and conventional education. It has resulted in emergence of a big group of youths devoted to the cause of society who have come forward to fulfil the development needed for creating the new era.
In addition, Bhartiya Sanskriti Gyan Pariksha (Indian Culture Aptitude Test) is being conducted at many schools throughout India which along with Sanskriti Mandals (Cultural Groups) have been greatly successful in realizing moral, intellectual and spiritual development of students. In the same way, Bal Sanskar Shala (School for Cultural Development of Children) has helped to achieve cultural development of children and the Elderly Literacy Campaign has empowered many illiterate elderly people with an ability to read and write.
3. Holistic Health
Its main aim is to make people aware about the importance of cleanliness, suitable diet and lifestyle, adequate exercise (physical activity) and rest. As a result of tireless efforts made in last 20 years, Ayurveda, Yagyopathy, Yoga and other ancient therapy have become widely adopted and admired. The research work carried out by Dev Sanskriti Vishwa-vidyalaya has received widespread recognition. Other programmes which have emerged from this movement are Natural lifestyle as a kind of therapy, training in herbal therapy, special therapeutic services and complete health management.
Cottage industry and Rural Industry need to be launched and developed by offering necessary training and support. The Design Department of Shantikunj has created ample helpful literature. Training sessions to train the trainers are also conducted at Shantikunj.
About 40 training centres have been established all over the country at a zonal level where training is imparted to facilitate self-reliance. Other movements linked to the self-reliance movement are Adarsha Gram (Ideal Village) and Gram Teertha Sthapna (making every village a revered place) and aim for a village where inhabitant are free from any kind of addition and are cultured, clean, healthy, literate, self-reliant and working together in a cooperative manner.
5. Environment Protection
Sadhana and yagya based efforts are being made for refinement of subtle environment. There are two main programmes for refinement of physical environment: 1. Garbage or Waste Management and 2. Augmenting greenery or vegetation.
1. Proper garbage management can turn unsightly and foul-smelling garbage into a money making medium. Decaying material can be turned into compost and other material can be recycled This can help environment as well as can become a source of income.
2. To promote greenery or vegetation, a nationwide campaign has been started to establish memorial gardens and to plant and maintain trees of local habitat.
The cleansing campaigns of holy River Ganga and lifeline-like River Narmada has helped the Mission to create a widespread public awareness about environment, water conservation and prevention of soil erosion.
6. Women Awakening and Youth Development
Educated and self-reliant women are well placed to help make their family cultured. This concept has become one of the main foundations of the Mission's activities ever since its inception. Gayatri Pariwar has made a memorable contribution to restoring women's religious rights by adopting and implementing women empowerment in a precisely right way.
Furthermore, DIYA (Divine India Youth Association) has inspired and encouraged 6.5 million youths of India to take part in the activities of development to fulfil the needs of these days.
7. Deliverance from Addiction and Eradication of Evil Traditions
The main aim of this campaign is to support constructive efforts to stamp out the evils of addiction such as disease, discord, poverty, disgrace, humiliation, downfall, etc.; as well as to ensure active role and participation by youths in society in the campaign. Gayatri Pariwar, prevented needless wastage of billions of rupees in extravagant marriages by promoting and facilitating ideal marriages. It has also done a great work in stopping extravagant feasts after death and restoring equal religious and social rights to everyone by eradicating discrimination on the basis of caste, class, creed, colour, gender, language, locality or faith. The new conception of spirituality will indeed bring lasting peace and bliss all over the world.
